For more than 30 years, The Mayflower has been home to a vibrant community of art lovers. And, just as our residents show their support as patrons, volunteers, board members and donors, we take pride in advocating for the organizations that enrich Central Florida with beauty, creativity and joy.

Likewise, many of those groups have graciously “returned the favor” – including the Orlando Museum of Art (or OMA), a longstanding partner of The Mayflower.

Through the partnership, residents eager to expand their intellectual horizons can attend monthly lectures on art appreciation at The Mayflower. And when they’re not discussing artwork in class, they can participate in docent-led tours through the museum’s latest exhibitions – including, most recently, the never-before-displayed works of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

“I always learn something new from the residents at The Mayflower,” says David Matteson, Associate Curator of Outreach and Education at OMA. “I love to hear how their experiences, values and perspectives influence their understanding of the artworks.”

According to Matteson, who oversees the museum’s educational tours, lectures, and studio programs, learning to engage with art is a lifelong journey – one that’s “more important now than ever.”

“During the pandemic, I think it was common to feel a greater sense of isolation,” he says. “But it’s through our experiences of the arts that we may find a deeper sense of belonging and connection. We come to realize that we are not alone; we are a part of something greater and more meaningful.”

If you haven’t yet, consider planning a visit to the Orlando Museum of Art, which is open to the public six days a week. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to check out these other “must-see” museums – located just minutes from The Mayflower:

  • Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. 11 minutes from The Mayflower.
A true “jewel” of Winter Park, the Morse Museum’s dazzling displays of stained glass and jewelry comprise the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
  • Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens. 8 minutes from The Mayflower.
Explore the scenic sculpture garden, gallery, and historic home of renowned Czech sculptor Albin Polasek, located just down the road from our Winter Park campus.
  • Rollins Museum of Art. 10 minutes from The Mayflower.
Formerly known as the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, the Rollins museum adopted a new name in preparation for its move to a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility across from the historic Alfond Inn.

From contemporary galleries like the Maitland Art Center to the fun and festivity of our annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, there’s something for everyone in Central Florida. And that’s true for The Mayflower, as well.

Here, you’ll find enriching classes, clubs, and programs … more opportunities to stay active and engaged … and a selection of stylish (and surprisingly affordable) apartments, one of which may be just right for you.
