In honor of Memorial Day, we thought it was fitting to share the special story of a pioneering couple – Mayflower resident Ima Black and her late husband, Delbert Black.
Delbert enlisted in the Navy in 1941, lived through Pearl Harbor and led an accomplished three-decade career. Along the way, Ima’s and Delbert’s mutual love and support sustained the couple through their time apart. Finally, Delbert made history in 1967 by becoming the Navy’s first Master Chief Petty Officer – a non-commissioned rank created to give the enlisted forces a voice in Washington.
Even today, Delbert’s contributions are still being honored. Ima was named Honorary Master Chief in 2007 and recently traveled to Pascagoula, Mississippi, for the christening of a new ship named in his honor.
